Makeup 101

By Chelsea, age 14, Virginia

Makeup is the first thing people notice about your face. Whether you're wearing too little or too much, it's definitely going to be seen. One of the biggest problems in girls our age is acne - in other words, pimples! My suggestion is to wash your face every day as soon as you wake up, using a cleanser and moisturizer such as Clean and Clear. Dove Soap is also a cheap, great face cleaner.

Make sure your face is clean before applying any makeup. Most girls our age don't wear foundation, but if you do, this is the first thing you should apply. Don't put on too much so that you look fake, just enough to even out your skin tone or hide that nasty pimple.

Your eye makeup should come next. First, apply a thin line of eye liner right on your lash line. Next apply eye shadow. For your skin tone try the colors listed below. When putting on eye shadow, start more intensely right on the crease, and go lighter as you go up. Make it so that at your brow, you can barely see it.

Now you're ready to start with the mascara. I think all girls should wear mascara because it draws attention to their eyes and makes them look prettier. Black is definitely the best color, but you can use blue or the color of your choice. Apply a coat to both your top and bottom lashes, starting with the bottom ones first. Then wait 5 minutes and apply a second coat for added length.

Next are your lips. I don't recommend lipstick for my age, but if that's what you like, then use something like pale pink (for light skin) or brown (for darker skin). I do recommend a clear lip gloss, or a lip gloss with a tiny bit of tint. Don't overdo it so that it looks like you just ate fried chicken. A little goes a long way.

My number one tip when wearing any sort of makeup is DON'T OVERDO IT!
