Dress for Success

By Kayla, age 19, Pennsylvania

Recently at work a young girl came in and asked me what was appropriate to wear to a funeral. It occurred to me that this is probably a common problem for many people, not just what to wear to a funeral, but also to job interviews and other special events. It's not something we think about until one of these events comes up, but you should always be prepared.

The important things to remember are that you want to look your best and not show too much skin. It's different when your getting dressed up to go out with your friends than it is when you're getting dressed up to go to a special event. Your goal should be business casual, something dressy but still comfortable. Also, be sure to wear black if you're attending a funeral. You don't want to end up like Scarlett in How to Deal, wearing a red dress and everyone is staring at you like you're crazy.

Keep your makeup subtle and natural looking - no bright and crazy colors or glitter. Waterproof makeup would be best for a funeral. That way you don't have mascara streaking down your cheeks. You'll want to keep your jewelry simple as well. Nothing flashy or over the top. Simple stud earrings and a necklace will do just fine.

Just think simple, comfort, and business casual, and you will be just fine when choosing your outfit for a job interview, funeral, or special event.
