Fall '07 Fashion Trend Alerts

By Stephanie Lynn, age 22, Massachusetts
SDM Editor-in-Chief

Okay, it's September again, as another summer bites the dust. To rule the school this fall, the word is add some argyle to your style. Here are all my Trend Alerts for Fall Fashionizing.

Trend Alert: Leather Jackets & Prints

Leather jackets are totally in this fall. Pair up your jacket with a cute and feminine patterned top to soften the look. I got this crimson red patterned cami at Old Navy. It's only $8.50. You can buy 2 or more for $6 each. Not a bad deal! This cami is also available in arctic ocean blue and sweet pollen yellow.

Trend Alert: Blazers, Graphic Tees & Plaid

Blazers are not just for business people and rock bands anymore! Coordinate your blazer this fall with a hot graphic tee. A bright color such as pink or yellow really brings the outfit to life. Be casual and wear your blazer with tight jeans. Or dress it up with black pinstriped pants or grey plaid capris. You can try wearing a black and white or blue and white horizontal striped top to "wow" the teacher for those class presentations ... and it's also perfect for job interviews.

If you're bored with the plain black or navy blazer look, then try a very short blazer top (perhaps in plaid) or a bright red tailored blazer ... for the bold among you. Plaid remains in this fall. Yay, plaid! More on this in a moment.

Trend Alert: Argyle, Legwear, High-Waisted Belts & Extra Large Shades

Prep it up with argyle! Coordinate your argyle with similar colors and fairly simple patterns. Thin black and white stripes are suitable with the knee-high socks shown in the photo, while large horizontal stripes may overpower the outfit. But if that's the look you're going for, then go for it! You can still wear your mini this fall while wearing these awesome knee-highs. Argyle seems to be available in everything from totes to headbands, sweaters, and shoes. Happy shopping!

Trend Alert: Plaid, Graphic Tees, & Wide Belts

Simple black leggings look super-classy under this trendy plaid skirt and wide belt from Kohl's ($19). You can do so much mixing and coordinating with a simple plaid skirt, capris, or pants. I chose a yellow graphic tee to sweeten up my outfit, but wear whatever works for you. I also found these new, cool striped AirWalk skimmers at Payless for only $17.99. The deep, semi-shiny grey looks stunning with the black, white, and yellow.

Mix It Up!

Feel free to have fun and mix these trends up a bit with stylish accessories, such as scarfs, belts, hats, etc. Mix fall's trends with timeless items and your favorite trends from spring. Now's your chance to stand out from the crowd!

Other Trends to Watch For

Babydoll Tees
Cardigan Sweaters
Vests & Sweater Vests
Jumpers
Belted Tops & Dresses
Trench Coats
Bangles
Ruffles

Whichever trends you choose to showcase this fall, be sure to make the outfit your own. I know it's tempting to go out and buy only what the "cool kids" are wearing. But start the year off right with a style that's freshly you. There are so many fashion options out there that even the "cool kids" may not know about.

Good Luck & Have Fun!!
