Harajuku Style - For You!

By Alexandra, age 22, Utah

I was watching a TV show from Japan the other day and some images from Tokyo caught my attention. Many of us would say that Japanese fashion is extravagant or crazy, but in my opinion those are not the right words to describe it. I have to recognize that I'm not a fan of Japan in general, but when it comes to fashion they are one of my favorites. I LOVE their nonconformism!

They are so unique, and the way they dress screams PERSONALITY! When I think about Japanese fashion, one name comes to my mind, and that is one of my favorite designers, Betsey Johnson, known for her exuberant designs. It got me to thinking, how wonderful it would be if we could criticize other people less, and the way they dress, and focus more on our own style.

Many of you have heard of Harajuku style. Well, it's actually a mix of styles, from designer clothes to goth, punk, and even traditional Japanese clothing, mixed and matched with colorful accessories. You would need a lot of guts to go out on the streets dressed like that if you're not in Japan. Well, if you don't live there, at least you can be a Harajuku girl for Halloween! I think it would be fun to mix and match or mismatch different styles, colors, and accessories and let your imagination run wild once in a while.

Harajuku is one of the most well known Japanese styles, but there are more, and I bet some of you have heard of these styles before: Lolita (classic, goth, sweet, etc.), Gyaru, Punk, Visual Kei, and so on.

One of the most famous Japanese Lolita clothing brands in the world is Baby, The Stars Shine Bright (BTSSB or Baby, for short). The original fashion house is located in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan, which neighbors Harajuku. They also have a retail store in Europe (Paris, France) and one in North America (San Francisco, California). If you live near those areas you should go and take a look at their store!

Let your personality out of its cage and have your own style! Be unique! BE YOU!

xoxo
