Sweet Designs 2010 Staff Interns
By Stephanie Lynn, age 25, Massachusetts
SDM Editor-in-Chief
In the summer of 2009, five local young women between the ages of 18 and 24 were chosen as interns. They did a great job, so I decided to do it again! For this year's internships, I decided to also open it up to long-distance candidates who would communicate with me online and by telephone a couple hours each week. Again, the program involves about 10-15 hours a week of work, both writing and working with me on behind-the-scenes projects to better the magazine. I ended up deciding I didn't have the time for both local and long-distance interns, so I chose to focus on the latter, and now that we're about halfway through the summer, I can say I'm very happy with my six choices, and so I want to introduce them to you! (in order of seniority):
Mayra, 19, from California, who joined us in May 2007, graces our cover this month. She was previously on the cover in August 2007. Watching Mayra's enthusiasm and enormous growth as a writer and a woman is a delight I hope you will share.
Kate, 19, from New Hampshire, joined us in January 2008, and has been featured in 2008 and 2009. She has the distinction of having written the most articles (and garnered the most Gold Stars) in our short history. Kate has produced many well-written college features and other nonfiction topics.
Briana, 19, from Pennsylvania, always bright and enthusiastic, came on board in March 2008, and was featured earlier this year. Briana has written everything from makeup reports to movie reviews.
Mariah, 16, from Minnesota, joined SDM in August 2008, and was featured in 2009. Mariah writes stories, poetry, and an impressive variety of nonfiction topics, some education related.
Gia, 18, from Florida (September 2008), is one of our very most talented poets and fiction writers, skillfully painting scenes and moods with words. Gia was featured in last month's issue.
Kimberly, 19, from California, came on board in March 2009, and recently added a Gold Star to her portfolio of entertainment reviews, college articles, and stories from her life to which many girls can relate.
